As an Internet marketer with a handful of blogs I need to manage, choosing the right blog hosting service provider is one of the most vital factor I need to take into consideration. It is just like looking for the right property vendor when it comes to buying an office space for a business.

In fact, I am not very sure about the property vendor in the outside world but I personally use Hostgator to host all my websites and blogs. However, the reasons why I choose Hostgator as my web hosting provider is because of the following reasons.

You probably do not know a lot about me but I am a very greedy person. The first criteria that I look into is the disk space provided by the service provider. The lowest disk space available in their plans is 350GB. I knew I would not need so much space for my website even all of them all up together. However, as greedy as I am it is simply irressistable to miss an offer like this.

My second factor of choosing a web hosting provider is the customer support they provide. After much research and comparisons, I would not even bother to go through the technical process from scratch.

A wise person will make full use of every single resrouce available. Their customer support is live most of the time and whenever my server is down or not working properly, I would simply go to their website and make a shout as loud as I want.

The third and the most important factor is the price. I am greedy yet I am a very stingy person. I want the best value with the minimal price possible. Hostgator’s prices are very reasonable and the reason it got me to commit to them is the $0.01 hosting deal. I got to pay $0.01 for the first month just for the sake of trying out and if I am happy, I would continue to subscribe to their hosting plan.

I had the try out and indeed I was very happy with them. Otherwise, you would not be seeing this post I have written today. I simply recommend the best and I believe it would benefit you in the same way.

PC registry repair programs and registry cleaners are all over the internet and the claims about them vary wildly. It is truly hard to know exactly what you should believe. There are people who will swear registry repair tools are the greatest thing since sliced bread and others who are a little more cautious in their description. The problem is knowing the truth about these PC maintenance tools. Will a registry cleaner or repair software truly fix a problem computer?

Well the answer to that question can be yes and no, you see it is not as simple as you might think. Certain problems with a computer can be repaired with a registry tool; however, there is no way short of trying it to know for sure if your PC’s problems will be addressed by registry repair software.

A registry repair tool will software does several things when you run it on your computer but its main function is to remove old entries that are no longer valid. This is the only possible “fix” they offer, and it is a good idea remove this old outdated information. Nevertheless, one of the worst thing this information can do is clutter up your computer registry, which can slow it down but it should not slow it down that much.

On occasion, these old registry entries can cause issues with loading programs. Specific programs may take forever to load if they do at all and you get weird error messages when trying to run the applications. You computer can even become instable at times.

Almost every installed program in a computer requires registry entries to work properly. In the registry is information on how to execute, location of files such as drivers and much more. If there is errant information in your registry when you start up your Windows based PC or try to open a program, your computer may have problems finding the correct drivers or other essential information, and this leads to some of the symptoms discussed above.

When you do not know for sure what the problem is with your computer you can never be 100% sure that a registry repair tool will fix the problem. Nevertheless, this type of software was designed to optimize your performance and can repair many problems. In fact running a registry clean is recommended to keep you computer running smoothly. Introduction

Welcome to An Insight into Stock Photography. This article is based on a talk given at Focus on Imaging 2007. I hope you find it interesting. Just remember these are my views only, they are not gospel and have been put together based solely on my experience of shooting and selling stock photography, primarily through Alamy and photographic magazines.

We’ve seen a lot of change in the markets and the economy in general. This has affected the stock photography market. But don’t lose hope, magazines and newspapers have an insatiable appetite for images.

One Approach

Having many options – and finding opportunities to build a business from photography. And stock photography is just part of that – a chance for someone else to market your images for you and to for you to get paid, while off doing something else. It’s like having commission only sales people working for you. The thing is you have to give them something saleable but you can’t give them a kick up the backside if you’re not selling much!!

Some commercial photographers don’t do it, some do, some make a living from it. The choices and balance is up to you, as a commercial photographer I do some of it.

It may seem like a big step but it’s not and it’s within most people’s grasp. Provided you understand the customer. This applies to both the Picture Library and the Ultimate Buyers.

Take a look around you. Pictures are everywhere – the printed media in its widest context has a massive appetite for images on a daily basis.

Humans generally don’t like reading online – well not for very long – they like tactile magazines to flick though and dip into and if they didn’t, the magazine industry would be long gone by now – wouldn’t it !!

Every magazine, exhibition, web site, company brochure and newspaper all need pictures on a regular basis – and if they don’t have it or can’t send a photographer to go out and shoot it – then they’ll buy it.

Printed media works on deadlines that go right down to the wire, so immediacy is important and the shots can’t be the same old ones used month in month out.

The corporate buyer generally will work to longer lead times and less tight deadlines – but not always – the images they buy can be more general or iconic – like these motivation posters you see in some shops .

Take for instance a sports shot of runners on a track – you might see it in the sports pages of a newspaper for a day, then maybe in a Athletics magazine that month – but it can soon become a poster with a motivational statement “Defeat” or “Winner” that has a whole new market.

So where are you – the photographer – in the pecking order so to speak. Take a look below.

• The Picture Buyer

You’re on the top of the list with the image library between you and the buyer, but at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to getting paid. But whilst you need to meet the technical requirements of the library and other submission requirements, it’s the picture buyer you must be thinking of long before you even contemplate picking up the camera.

The stock library will do the sales and marketing of your images, for a percentage which varies from library to library, but they must have images that buyers want.

Before you sign up, read through the agreement and see if the set up suits your requirements.

Diverse Sectors

Each of these publications, Gossip magazines, The Times Newspaper, Corporate Publications, serve a specific market – but each buy photos from Alamy to mention just one library – they also buy from many others too – in order to make the publication that day, week or month.

So what sort of pictures do these publications buy? Well it’s very varied. Just flick through and look at the side of the shot, it’s likely to have an image source next to it.

• Take a Break – items / products, staged poses – youth etc.
• Daily mail – travel
• Environment – utilities, waste, pollution etc, – front cover.

Get Rich Quick – NO!

Some say it’s a numbers game – true to some extent, but the way I look at it is this, if you’ve got 10,000 images of shots that won’t sell – you’ve got nothing .

For me as a professional photographer that provides photography services, it’s the long term view – looking to develop and maintain a set of saleable images.

Remember pictures are perishable – i.e. – they become stale – and this will vary dependent upon the industry sector or subject they apply to.

Transport, fashion, IT, business, communications all need, in my view, re-shooting each year. For example a man in a suit by a computer the size of a house in the 1950′s isn’t the modern business image of today.

Wildlife, sky scenes, landscapes, travel pictures – less so – but look at any developing city – take London – since the Wheel and the Gherkin went up all the skylines are different, also look at Dubai – developing all the time.

Get rich quick – no it’s not – but you can build up an underlying income if you think about saleable pictures and keep them relevant – remember they have to illustrate a story – so need to tell a story in their own right.

What is Stock

So let’s take a look at how you get in and who there is to choose from. Each Library has its own benefits and key target markets, so find one that suits you and what you are good at shooting.

Most will have web sites and these will stipulate how to join of make submissions.

$ Sites

Personally I don’t like them and here’s why. I’m going to set you a project and at the end of it I will buy the photograph from you. So you go and shoot a subject you like, do your research, do the shoot, post produce the image and upload it to my site and hey presto – I pay you 50p at today’s exchange rate — any takers ? I rest my case!

Submission Rules

All picture libraries will set technical requirements and these will vary depending on how much server space they want to invest in.

Alamy work to 48mb TIFF minimum – 1, to keep the bar high enough that only the serious photographer applies and 2, to give their customers’ choice and immediate access to high quality images. Now they’ve changed this from the above to accept JPEG images – so your file size is down to around 8 meg.

Others work on thumbnail sizes then let the buyer contact you. Personally, I think, trying to judge a shot off a 100 or 200k image is not doing the shot justice.

Others specify minimum specifications of camera / model, or make you go though an approval or recommendation process. The thing with this is to find a library that matches your needs and capabilities. Also the amount time you have available to dedicate to stock photography.

Licenses

Non-Exclusive License

The buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the image, but another image buyer can also purchase and use the image under the same licence.

The picture buyer must specify, each time: intended use, media, territory and duration.

Pricing is based on intended use, media, duration and territory. The territorial pricing will be matched to the specific country.

Exclusive License

The picture buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the image.

The picture buyer obtains exclusive use of an image under the terms of the licence: these terms may affect the use, media, territory and/or duration in which the image can by used by other buyers.

Rights protection can be an advantage for high-profile projects such as ad campaigns and promotions.

Royalty Free (RF)

The image buyer pays a one-off fee – they do not have to pay royalties to contributors on a use-by-use basis.

The picture buyer will not know who else is using the image.

The picture buyer should check that the image has the appropriate releases before using the image where a release is required, for example Model release for people and property release for prominent buildings or logos.

Commission

• 50/50
• 60/40 but with global distribution
• 70/30
• 80/20 – Photographers Direct

Again find one that works for you and also find out when you’ll get paid and any minimum balances you must have to get paid. Sometimes you can wait 3 months for your money.

Work Flow

As a provider of photography services I shoot RAW and make minor adjustments to images. Now I’m using Adobe Lightroom in place of Raw Shooter and it’s speeded up my work flow considerably. Photoshop – I use this far less now but only to colour and touch out any dirt or what might look like dirt – by this I mean the occasional bird in the sky can look like sensor dust if it’s a way off in the distance. Resize your image. Output the file to the required format.

Then depending on the library upload over the Internet or cut a CD / DVD.

An Example

Take an older camera the Nikon D70 – 6.1 mega pixel camera. Raw files were around 4 or 5 MB and a TIFF was at 17MB with the JPEG at 4MB.

To meet the submission guidelines you need to Interpolate the image – make it bigger. In Photoshop this was Image > Image Size>Percent. Increase by 168% to give a 48 – 50 MB sized image. Then Save as Jpeg – 5 – 7MB.

I now shoot on a Nikon D300. RAW files are now 18 – 19 mb, opened in CS3 at 34 mb – requiring interpolation by only 20%.

What I’ve Sold

Wonderful sunsets, superb travel pictures, glamour images, or maybe my Dad’s cat! These are just a few examples of shots that have sold.
My dad’s cat, police cars, road signs, street scenes in New York, studio models and traffic jams.

Finding More Value

There are plenty of magazines that will promote your sold work, FPME (Now out of print March 2009) is just one of them and if you have sold a shot just let the editor know – chances are it can earn you some more money.

Not only that, look out for sites like Photographer Direct that offer an Image Request service – all you need to do is send 1 email. Also look to the corporate clients – they too may take an image if it fits with their style – be brave, make that approach, but do your research first.

Top Tips

Check out how many images of your subject matter already exist in a library, then ask yourself – can these be improved, shot differently or updated.

Read the picture needs issued by Stock libraries, they tell you what sells and what is needed, don’t ignore them.

In Northern United States and Canada

By the middle of the month at the latest all such bedding plants as Begonias, Cannas, Fuchsias, Geraniums, Heliotropes, Abutilons and Blood Leaf should be set in the location they are to decorate. Early June, too, is an appropriate time for planting Tomatoes, Peppers and Eggplants. Sow seeds of fast-growing annuals, such as Zinnias, Globe Amarants, Marigolds, Sweet Alyssum, Cosmos and Sunflowers, for a good display later. Continue to make regular sowings of Corn, Beets, Carrots, Lettuce and other crops of this type. Make modest sowings of Cabbage, Cauliflower and Broccoli.

Propagate Strawberries by runners to provide strong young plants for setting out in newly prepared beds in August. It is by no means too late to set,out Dahlias. Indeed, plantings made at this time usually do better than earlier ones. Plant, too, Gladioli, Montbretias, Caladiums, Tigridias and Tuberous Begonias. When the foliage has died is the best time to lift, separate and replant Narcissi that have been in position for some years and have become crowded and perhaps weakened.

The shearing of hedges will now demand attention. Cut them so that the base of the hedge is a little wider than the top. If you didn’t make sowings of perennials in late May, do so now. Among the best kinds to raise in this way are Delphiniums, Columbines, Anchusas, Stokesias, Geums, Alyssums, Iberis, Campanulas and Coreopsis. This is a good time to insert cuttings of many perennials and rock garden plants. Set them in a bed of well-firmed sand or in perlite or vermiculite in a shaded coldframe.

Routine chores such as picking faded blooms, cutting off old flower stems, cultivating, weeding and watering are likely to take a good deal of time this month. Take faded flowers off Lilacs, Rhododendrons and Azaleas. June is the month of Roses. Now comes their finest display. Cut their flowers with discretion, leaving behind as many leaves as possible. Keep up the dusting or spraying program faithfully.

Mulching to conserve moisture, reduce weeding, maintain more even soil temperatures and, in some cases, to improve fertility is an admirable practice. It is important to spread the mulches before really hot weather arrives. Control of weeds in lawns should receive serious attention. Various sprays are available for different kinds of weeds. These should be used in the ways recommended by their manufacturers. Hand weeding is effective and inexpensive. House plants may be put outdoors now for a Summery “vacation.” For those kinds that need shade, a spot under a tree or along the north side of a wall is suitable.

In the South

Don’t let your garden suffer from lack of moisture. Adequate watering during periods of dry weather is one of the great secrets of success with flower gardening, vegetable gardening and the maintenance of lawns. Moisture-loving trees and shrubs, too, must be cared for in this respect. This particularly applies to trees, shrubs and evergreens that have been transplanted within the last year.

Mulching is a great aid in conserving moisture and brings other benefits too. Keep Dahlias pruned, staked and tied and water them, fertilize them and cultivate the soil about them shallowly to promote healthy growth. Remove faded blooms from Crape Myrtles, Butterfly Bushes, and from annuals and perennials. Azaleas and many other kinds of shrubs and some trees can be propagated by cuttings inserted now. Dahlias, Gladioli and Cannas can be planted until the middle of the month.

On the West Coast

In the northwest make sowings of Beets, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Lettuce, Kohlrabi, Rutabaga. Carrots and Beets for late crops. Summer-flowering plants such as Roses, Fuchsias, bird of paradise, Geraniums, Begonias and Dahlias will benefit from a light dressing of fertilizer applied this month.

Watering and other routine chores such as staking and tying and cultivating as well as harvesting will occupy much of the gardener’s time during June. Attention to disease and pest control must not be relaxed. Pick faded blooms from Azaleas and Rhododendrons before seed pods form. Wage constant warfare on weeds.

Hydrilla is a freshwater plant. It is a plant that grows up to the surface in water of about 20 feet deep. If there’s anything we’ve learned in recent months, it is that we should be energy smart whenever possible. There is a real payoff for  concerving energy as we drive and in our homes.  Even though oil prices have come down to half of their peak in mid-2008, we know that they could go up again in a hurry.

My vehicle is a large Yukon, which is great for hauling things.  Unfortunately it does not get great gas mileage so I have trimmed the number of trips I make to the office as much as I can. The fuel budget has been helped by that strategy.  If it weren’t for the load-carrying capacity I would look for a more fuel-efficient, smaller automobile.

We have tried to cut back on energy usage at home by installing extra insulation and double-pane windows.  The news stories do have some influence on our way of living, hopefully making us think about ways we can cut back with all the energy talk.

Talk about a waste of energy—the fuel spent on airplanes, helicopters and trucks in fighting wildfires in California is insane.  Also, think about all the gasoline used by folks vacating their threatened homes.  I found some discussion about wildfire prevention and other fire safety issues at the Minutemanfire site.  Even when fire buffers had been created, homes with tile roofs have been destroyed in fires, surprisingly.

Having been amongst the first to purchase the Dell 910 Mini I wanted to share my experience with others that might be thinking about acquiring this item or one of the other sub-notebook or ‘netbooks’ as they have become known. I manage a web design agency and I’ve been considering the idea of acquiring myself a more lightweight laptop as my old Dell Inspiron from 2003 is as heavy as a brick.

Shortly after having retired the old Dell to my girlfriends house (I couldn’t face lugging it back and forwards any longer so it just lives there now, I might well do the same with myself one of these days soon!) it stopped charging and wouldn’t run from the mains, so eventually when I gave it to my tech to repair he found out that it was one of the known faulty models, the 5150 which developed a problem with the motherboard overheating after prolonged use, this I found out about 2 years after they stopped replacing them as part of a class action lawsuit, shame I’m two years too late to get it replaced for free!

Ah well what’s 150 quid for a factory refurbished Motherboard off ebay, compared with years of loyal service in spite of being dropped a couple of times, spat on repeatedly, eaten over and all manner of other not recommended usage styles! I even used to have it hooked up to my TV via the onboard S-VHS port and watch films on it, so it has seen some action, oh yes!Not that I download movies off the internet you understand of course, oh no that would just be wrong, and illegal and I wouldn’t want to risk getting my broadband disconnected!

However, this was all instigated by my step dad who just bought a top of the range Toshiba Portege at around £1,200, but he’s at that time in life where 1,200 quid is affordable, where as I’m still in financial recovery from my last divorce (yes there was more than one!)! So I happened across an ad for the Dell Inspiron 910 Mini on the Dell site whilst looking at specs of laptops for a client, and there it was £299 inc VAT and delivery. What a bargain I thought! (If you are reading this three years after I wrote it and they are now giving them away free on the front of Corn Flake packets then I will be even more gutted, or maybe I’ll just get one for all the family!)

Anyway there I was flexible friend on hot standby, wrist twitching ready to buy, but hang on I thought, why am I buying this, do I really need it? No, I don’t NEED it I just WANT ONE ! So then some sensibility came over me and I put my credit card away, feeling all smug with myself at having managed to resist an impulse purchase!

However, the following day my step Dad needs me to take a look at his new machine because he can’t get the printer to work and can’t get it to see the other machines on our network (this job for me, comes with the territory!) So I happen to have to work on this ultra lightweight new laptop, wow I’m amazed at how small it is, especially compared to my old Dell 5150! I wish I had cash spare to invest in one of these I thought! I noticed he didn’t have my recommended security software installed though.I installed my favourite pc software security programs: Avast Anti Virus and Spybot Search & Destroy, the only (free) security software combination that truly works in my opinion.

The following day I had to go to a client’s and as it was first thing in the morning I went straight there from my girlfriends house and took the old 5150 with me (which gives me a great excuse to call in on my way back and drop it off, coincidentally around about lunchtime when there might be the chance of a ham, cheese and salad sandwich on the go! ) So anyway, I about put my back out trying to put this incredibly heavy laptop in the car passenger foot well whilst sitting in the drivers’ seat! One of those ‘put your back out’ manoeuvres. So having experienced the new lightweight machines first hand, and realised I do have a genuine requirement for the new Dell Inspiron mini after all, weighing in at around 1kg, you know I planned to get that credit card out again as soon as I was able!

So as I had a management meeting that afternoon I informed my Finance Manager I would be ordering one and that was that. It was Friday October 3rd when I placed the order on the Dell website, and on the 8th I got back from a client meeting to find a small cardboard box on my desk with the Dell log on the side, I thought that it couldn’t possibly be the new mini as the confirmation email I got said it would be delivered on or around the 20th October, but sure enough it really had arrived! Just a 5 day turn around, wow!

So I’m like a kid in a sweet shop thinking “best day ever” (See Heroes Season 3), I was ecstatic and carefully unpacked it, tossing instructions and disks to one side of course, “read those later” I thought. I got it out and started setting it up straight away, you know remove Tiscali Free Trial and all the other junk software these things come with these days.

As it has an integrated web cam I also downloaded Windows Live Messenger and had a short video call with my missus whilst she was doing her ironing, fantastic! What a great bit of kit!So next I Googled ‘mobile broadband suppliers’ and toyed with ordering the USB dongle from Three, as their 5GB monthly allowance is only 15 quid a month so the best looking deal, providing those coverage stories you hear about Three Mobile are not really the case! (Update: Yes the coverage is lousy in all the areas I want to use it, even at my desk I have to connect the dongle to a USB cable and hang it from my roof to get 1 bar signal strength, buy another brand!) Current suggestion is for an O2 dongle as they have good coverage and a good backbone speed.

Anyway, it was soon time to go and get my daughter from school so I thought yeah I’ll take it with me and even though I don’t have the mobile broadband dongle yet I can continue configuring it in car park if I’m early. I was early, so I turned it on, it said:

Dell refuses to send me a replacement one on this call. Why? Well it was because they couldn’t look up the service tag on their network! How ridiculous, I really couldn’t understand it at all, it’s not like it was a virtual pc or something really complicated!

They suggested I called back in 24-48 hours, well I told them exactly what I thought of their suggestion as I’m sure you can image, but to no avail. I did indeed have to call back today and they have agreed to send me a replacement unit as it is within 7 days of delivery.

I hope the replacement arrives as promptly as the original unit did…

So conclusion? Apart from the fact it doesn’t work (a faulty drive in my opinion) and for the life of me I can’t get it to boot from an external drive or USB key (it doesn’t have a CD or DVD drive you know) it feels really solid, looks lovely, and is nice to handle (sounds a bit like the ideal companion to an i-phone 2.0 doesn’t it!).

Like most reviewers have experienced, the keys are small (but blackberry users manage and they are larger than those keys) and the right shift key is tiny and means you can’t type an @ in the usual fashion. But the screen is nice, 3 USB slots, a monitor connector, Ethernet and earphones and mic connectors although it has both speakers and mic internally so you can Live Messenger without having to plug anything in.

On the whole, I would recommend it, providing you get one that isn’t broken ! I am also yet to try it with LogMeIn which is my preferred way of dealing with how to access emails, lots of passwords, specialist software and all that kind of thing when you are out and about. Possibly the screen is going to be too small to be able to work with for extended periods of time, but I’ll let you know when the replacement arrives and I have had chance to give it a proper testing, assuming that one doesn’t break on me as soon as I start urm ‘configuring’ it!

Further Update: So I have had the Dell Mini for about erm, wow nearly 12 months! It would never work with LogMeIn over the 3 dongle. To be fair Three were very helpful, until we took the dongle out and successfully used it in another one of my machines and were able to connect on LogMeIn without any problems, at this point they referred me to Dell, at which point I lost the will to live!

It is all to do with one of the browser settings, not remembering itself when you tick the check box and hit Apply. I can’t remember which one it was now, and maybe ie 8 will have fixed the problem or it might work on Firefox browser instead, I just never got round to trying to sort it out again and tend to use the Mini more now to read the news in bed with my cup of tea in the morning.

It is too small to use for really extended periods but it is great for checking your email when you’re out and about, or for a quick impulse surf when you’re watching tv and you want to remind yourself what other films that actor or actress was in!I suppose if you have it hooked up to one of those large lcd monitors it would work just as well as any PC.

It’s a great little machine though and also works quite well down the pub, because I can actually fit it in the pocket of my big coat, and that is proper cool, except it doesn’t like beer puddles much so I tend to avoid taking it most of the time, unless I know I’m going to need to log on, but then the pub has got a sexy new Mac which is already covered in beer so I prefer to use that (any excuse to get behind the bar really!)

In summary though it has not had any hardware problems since the initial replacement was received. On the whole I have found that Dell kit tends to be pretty reliable anyway, especially when you are dealing with the more business based items whereas this is obviously more consumer oriented. With a Dell if they are going to breakdown they will usually do so within the first 6 months of use and generally after that they will keep going until they reach their recommended service intervals such as changing the disks after a couple of years and that kind of thing, assuming you continue to use them in the same fashion throughout their life spans.

It should be made clear though that these mini Dell laptops/netbooks, call them what you will, do not having a regular hard disk drive inside them. A normal hard drive has a disk inside it that physically spins round and a ‘head’ which moves backwards and forwards over the sectors quite like the relationship between the stylus and the tracks on an old fashion vinyl record(which being 40 next year I do remember from my childhood)!

The hard drives within the Dell mini, and other netbooks too I should image, are solid state, that is to say they are rather like USB flash drives or memory keys. In fact I think from a picture I saw they look more like RAM memory chips all joined together than a single physical device. The advantage of using solid state memory over traditional hard drives is that they use less power, they are not as heavy and they are quieter.

My netbook is blissfully quiet in comparison to any of my other computers, desktops or laptops. Although if you are auditorily hyper-sensitive to noise like I am then you can notice a very slight hum or whine when you give it something to do that requires it to access the hard drive. Most people probably won’t notice this but if you are familiar with the faint hum from your mobile phone charger or other devices of that ilk that transform power from one state to another then you might know what I am talking about. It certainly isn’t a problem though, although the power adapter for the machine itself does make some odd noises if you listen to it closely.

My favourite aspect of this machine is that in some it elicits the same response as having a small puppy or kitten out and about with you, especially down the pub where if you get it out to a bunch of girls you can hear the ooh and ahhh’s of girls who think something is cute! That is priceless!

Furniture arrangement can either be fun or maddening. The kilt is something which many Scots and people of Scottish decent feel very strongly about.

It is not just a fashion symbol but an important part of our Scottish heritage. Ask almost anyone anywhere in the world what one symbol they think of when the word Scotland or Scottish is mentioned to them and they will respond either Tartan or the kilt.

Although most Scots do not not wear the kilt as part of their day to day clothing it is almost compulsory on special occasions such as weddings and other formal occasions. Here in Aberdeen where I live hundreds of students have been graduating from the two local universities and almost every male graduate has chosen to wear the kilt for the formal photos. Some of them may have not have been Scots by birth and their only real connection with Scotland has been through attending university in Aberdeen Scotland but they still wore the kilt.

The USA and Canada were amongst the first countries in the world to create a special tartan day to commemorate how important Scots have been in developing their country. Curiously the Scottish Parliament have yet to declare any special tartan day although there has been discussions about it for some years. However this may change in the near future as Scots recently elected a new government from the Scottish Nationalist Party which is perhaps more focused on preserving the Scottish Culture than our other parties. However this is not going to be an advert for this political party.

Despite the non recognition of Tartan Day by national government many of our towns and cities have agreed a day when they would celebrate the event. Each town or city will hold their own parades with kilted bagpipers marching down the main streets. A wonderful sight to behold (although not every one tends to appreciate the music of the traditional bagpipes).

Anyway back to the title about Postmen wearing kilts.

I have just heard today about a postman (are we allowed to use that term or should it be Postal Service Delivery Person?) who has been just launched a campaign to be allowed to wear a kilt when delivering mail as part of his official uniform. No, the postal service worker is not in Scotland but based in Lacey, Washington USA. Dean Peterson has sent around 1,000 letters to Postal Service union branches in every US State with photos of himself wearing a prototype official uniform kilt.

I have not seen the photos myself or know of any Scottish connection he may have as a reason for wearing the kilt but it seems to me to be a good opportunity for Scots across the USA to make a stand and support Dean in his campaign. Lets face it if Scots made the USA so special that President Woodrow Wilson stated

“Every line of strength in American history is a line colored with Scottish blood”.

who can stop Scots wearing their national costume at work.

How To Put Your Best Foot Forward:

Disclaimer:  These foot ailments are the most common, but for serious foot pain, please consult your podiatrist or a podiatric surgeon.

1.       Do you have Plantar Fascitis?  This feels like a sharp stabbing pain in your heel and it is worse when you get up in the morning.

·         Cause – The plantar fascia is a that thick band of tissue running along the bottom of the foot from heel to toe and people with all types of insteps (arches)  are prone to this irritation.  If you wear very flat or really high heels, the problem will get worse.

·         A shoe should support the arch.  If not, the fascia will stretch and that will cause further inflammation.  Does your Achilles tendon feel tight?  That is also one of the symptoms.

·         Treatment – Choose shoes with some structure.  Pairs of shoes that have some arch support and enclose your heel will be much better than flip flops or flats.  Avoid going barefoot as much as possible.

·         Stretch Your Foot In the Mornings – When you sleep, your plantar fascia is relaxed.  It gets a real wake-up call of tension when your first put your weight on it.  Before beginning your busy day, wrap a towel around your feet and pull the toes back, gently  stretching the tendons. 

·         Reduce Swelling – Using a plastic bottle filled with water, freeze it, and then roll it under your foot for a few minutes to relieve the pain.

·         Consult a podiatrist for custom orthotics – I know you may not think it makes a difference, but these special inserts are molded specifically to your foot’s shape!  This will help control foot motion and decrease the daily strain on the plantar fasciae when added to the inside of your shoe. 

2.       Ingrown Toenails?  This feels like a throbbing sensation and is most often located on the side of one of your big toes.  Is it swollen and red?

·         Cause – When the nail edge grows sideways into the skin of the toe, it forms a toenail that is growing inward instead of straight outward.  The pressure on the nail bites into the surrounding skin and can really cause some pain or infection.  If your shoes are too tight or narrow around the toe area, you are at risk for getting an ingrown toenail. If you cut your toenails incorrectly, you could also get an ingrown toenail. 

·         Treatment – Don’t wear pointy toed shoes.  If you’re going to be walking a lot, carry your dress shoes and walk in structured walking shoes. 

·         Use moisture cream on your feet daily – Reduce callus formation by keeping feet well rubbed and moisturized.  Before wearing shoes, make sure the lotions and creams are absorbed and your feet are dry.  When a callus develops, it causes more pressure on the ingrown nail or other parts of your foot. 

·         Cut toenails strait across.  Don’t file the corners down.  If you get pedicures, make sure they follow these procedures, don’t assume they will or know what they’re doing.  Choose a reputable salon or go to a podiatrist.

·         See a podiatrist if you think you have an infection!  Don’t delay!  No “self-surgery” as digging around on your toenails or skin can lead to serious infection and deeper injury to the nail or foot.

3.       Bursitis – This feels like a painful bump and is located on the back of the heel. 

·         Cause – This can occur when you have an enlarged heel bone.  If you wear stiff-backed shoes, this can worsen the bump further, inflaming the bursa, which is a protective sac of fluid.

·         Treatment – Wear shoes with open backs, until the irritation has lessened, or all the time, whichever is necessary.

·         Use Dr. Scholl’s Foam Cushions (donut shaped pad) – Place this pad over the bump to alleviate pressure and use ice at the end of the day to soothe the inflammation.

·         Consult a Podiatrist – If you have chronic and constant pain in this area of the foot, consult a podiatrist for advice and possible removal of the bump.

4.       Stress Fracture? This feels like a tender area, frequently on the front part of the foot, along the 2^nd or 3^rd metatarsal, the long bones in the top middle of the foot.

·         Cause – Any repetitive stress on the bone, like walking and running on hard surfaces and while wearing shoes that are not absorbing enough of the shock.

·         Treatment – See a doctor!  You will need a surgical shoe while you heal.  That shoe has a hard bottom that will keep the affected bones from bending.

·         Be Patient – Stress fractures heal in about 4 – 8 weeks, normally.  Don’t over stress the foot, no running or long walks.

·         Prevent re-injuries – Keep your weight at a healthy level and wear supportive shoes.

5.       Bunions – These are sensitive and protruding lumps or bumps at the heads of the big-toe joints and can pull your toe to an angle. 

·         Cause – These might be hereditary, and can be developed if you have low arches, or your feet tend to roll inward.  Your bone actually moves as the bump seems to get larger.

·           Pointy toed shoes can make the bunions worsen.

·         Treatment – Shoe choice is critical.  Best choices are shoes with a wide toe area and a lower heel but not flat.

·         Gel Pads – Placing a gel pad over the bunions to cushion them and reduce the pain is helpful.

6.       Neuroma – This is a shooting pain in the ball of the foot.

·         Cause – This pain is caused by pressure on the nerve in the underside of the foot.  Swelling can occur.  Narrow, pointed shoes put more pressure on an already irritated nerve so pick shoes with wider toe room.

·         Treatment – Wide toe areas, and low heels. 

·         Use anti-inflammatories.  Ibuprofen is good but if you don’t experience relief see a podiatrist.

·         Surgery – For chronic neuroma that doesn’t get better, surgery such as cryotreatment can help .  Your podiatrist can make that determination.

MLM, or Multi Level Marketing, when combined with the Internet, creates a powerful formula for creating a successful home business and achieving financial freedom.

This business model is used by hundreds of companies to move their goods and services to the end consumer.  In this article, my goal is to provide you with information on what this industry is and what it is not.

Multi Level Marketing is simply a business model for moving products and services from production to the consumer using independent distributors with a multi level commission payout plan.  Since distributors can recruit other distributors and establish teams that work together, this business model is often also called Network Marketing.

There are many myths about MLM companies, including that they are illegal pyramid schemes or scams.  For true Multi Level Marketing companies, nothing could be further from the truth.  Unfortunately, those who believe these myths, simply do not understand how MLM companies work.

The first thing that you need to know is that MLM is not illegal and it is not a pyramid scheme.  While the organizational structure resembles a pyramid in shape, this is true of almost all businesses.  There are far more workers in the lower ranks of any business then at the top, if not, the business would collapse.  Not everyone in the company can be CEO or Vice President.  If fact, Multi Level Marketing companies are one hundred percent legal and many multi-million dollar companies use this business model to market their products.

Some well known Multi Level Marketing companies include Herbalife, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Shaklee, Amway, Tupperware, Princess house (a subsidiary of Colgate Palmolive), A. L. Williams (Insurance), Melaleuca, U.S. Sprint, MCI, and NSA.  Companies such as these have been around for decades.

There are hundreds more MLM companies and just like other companies, some are good and some are not so good.  But MLM is certainly here to stay and it is an explosive growth field!  In fact, increasingly you will find more and more Fortune 500 companies employing the Network Marketing business model for some portion of their marketing portfolio!

So why are MLM companies and programs becoming so popular?  Well, the business model offers a wonderful opportunity for the “little guy” to start his own business on a part time basis with very little investment money upfront, but with a large income potential if she or he is willing to put in some work!  Contrary to what some people would want you to believe, MLM is certainly not a get rich quick scheme and requires effort to grow your business.

John Paul Getty is often quoted as having said that he would always prefer earning 1% of a hundred peoples efforts than 100% of his own efforts.  And that is precisely what Multi Level Marketing is all about.  The Multi Level Marketing sales force members are not actually employees of the company, but instead they are independent distributors who are compensated for their efforts by commission based on the amount of product moved by not only themselves, but also by those whom they recruit as distributors.

As each distributor recruits others to become distributors, they create what is known as a downline and in addition to their own retail sales commissions, they earn a wholesale commission on the amount of products their downline distributors move to consumers.  This process goes on for some designated number of levels and is where the term “multi level” originates.

The more people a distributor can recruit for his downline, the larger will be their total commissions.  The number of levels that a distributor will earn override commissions on will depend upon the company’s compensation plan but five to seven or more levels is not unusual.  These wholesale override commissions can quickly add up for distributors with a large downline.

A strong incentive is thus created not only for a distributor to recruit more distributors for their downline, but also to train them to move products as well.  Thus a successful distributor will want to duplicate their success by teaching their downline members how to be successful.  By making their downline members successful, they make themselves more successful.

Building large stable residual income is therefore the result of successfully recruiting, training, and retaining others.  The better one is at doing these things, the larger their income will become.  While it is not necessarily easy, it can be very rewarding.

These auctions are called Reserve auctions. 4. The Multiple Item Auctions

This is the rarest and most complicated auction types and designed for sellers who have multiple pieces of same items for sale. Here buyers bid on price and also quantity. Sellers generally don’t go for such complicated procedure. What they generally do is that they simply list how many items they has to offer and fix a per unit price. Would you be willing to bet $300 of your own money that your home is worth what you think it is? Unless you’re ultra-competitive and will bet on pretty much anything, my guess is your answer would be a resounding “No!”

When you go to buy a home, or refinance your existing home, that’s exactly what you’ll be doing in most cases. This is one of the lesser known and most common mortgage ripoffs that occur because people outside the industry don’t know better. Knowing this and other mortgage financing secrets can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Purchasing a home, unless you’re independently wealthy, involves borrowing the majority of the purchase price from a lender, typically a bank. Before the lender will give you the money, they’re going to want some assurance that the property you’re going to buy is worth at least that much money, and in most cases more. It’s unusual these days to find any lender that will give you 100% of the value of a property. It’s typically 15-20% now. A far cry from the wild and woolly days before the mortgage market crash!

So, let’s say you want to buy a house. You go out and find the perfect house. You and the seller haggle back and forth and settle on a price of $100,000, just to keep the math simple.

Now you go find a lender and ask them to give you a mortgage. They tell you “Okay, we’ll give you $80,000.” You’re okay with that, so you proceed with the mortgage application.

As part of the mortgage application process, the lender will require an appraisal of the property. The appraisal must be done by a certified professional appraiser. The lender isn’t going to take the owner’s word for it!

Typically, the lender schedules the appraiser’s visit. The appraiser calls the property owner and arranges to visit the property. You, the applicant, are required to pay for the appraisal before it can take place. In my area, this fee is generally around $300.

So, you’ve now paid $300 to have the property appraised. If the appraiser agrees that the property is worth at least $100,000, no problem. The application process moves forward.

What if the appraiser says the property is worth less than $100,000?

Ready…?

You don’t get the loan, and, worse, you don’t get your $300 back! You just bet $300 and lost!

Lenders have been doing this for years and it’s become accepted as a way of doing business. People simply suck it up, pay the $300 and hope for the best. In recent years when property values were rising rapidly, this was rarely a problem, unless the seller had ridiculous expectations and the buyer no clue about the real value of the property. Nowadays, however, property values are declining and it’s much less certain that the seller, however well intentioned, really knows the value of their property.

Some reputable mortgage brokers have adopted a policy of paying for the appraisal out of their own pockets. This puts the onus on them to do their homework and have a good knowledge of the current property values in their area. From their perspective, it eliminates the possibility that they would have to call a potential customer and tell them they just blew $300.

The buyer will pay the appraisal fee as part of the normal closing costs, so it’s not like they don’t have the obligation to pay it. With the broker paying the fee first, this eliminates the risk on the part of the buyer and is simply good customer service. Shop around for mortgage lenders and brokers and always ask them who pays the appraisal fee!
