Ways To Prevent Child Drownings in Arizona

Drowning is the main reason for dying in Arizona (AZ) in kids below four years old. (See Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona)

There is no solitary solution suggested to avoid drownings. What is encouraged is a 3-step approach: “Block, Watch and Learn.

Step One – Block.
Block the pool with a barrier such as a pool cover or fence. Keep bathroom doors shut so small children can’t drown in toilets. Block access to bodies of water.

Step Two – Watch.
Strict supervision should be exercised in the vicinity of all bodies of water. Most common drownings happen in lakes, pools, bathtubs, toilets, buckets, and ponds.

Step Three – Learn.
Learn how to swim and take CPR classes. All kids need to take swimming instruction as well.

A CPR Class can be the difference between Life and Death to a loved one. Anybody that has a child needs to take CPR courses and take refresher courses biannually.

When you take CPR Training you will learn to administer CPR to Children, Infants, and Adults according to the guidelines established by the American Heart Association.

Typically, when a child drowns first responders such as EMT’s, Paramedics, and Firefighters are the first to begin CPR. Many bystanders are reluctant to perform CPR because they are afraid of doing it wrong or hurting the person further. If your boy or girl drowns, every second counts. You must not wait for emergency personnel to get there to initiate CPR. Every minute that goes by diminishes the likelihood of survival. CPR is more successful when performed within the 1st 5 minutes after the patient ceases breathing. How long will it take for paramedics to arrive? Five minutes? Ten minutes? If this is your child, can you afford to not know CPR?
